OVERVIEW

A Partnership Built on Performance

For a high-volume tire distribution operation, transportation is not just about moving freight from point A to point B. It is about timing, labor planning, customer commitments, and reducing risk across every shipment.

That is exactly the environment in which Dunlop + Falken operates.

At its Joliet distribution center, the company serves customers across 15 states and Canada, managing a demanding outbound operation where consistency matters and delays carry real operational consequences. Since first partnering in mid-2020, GP Transco has grown from a supplemental provider into a core transportation partner for Dunlop + Falken — helping support reliable service, flexible capacity, and a more efficient day-to-day shipping operation.

That relationship has expanded significantly over time, from just a few trailers per week in the early stages to a steady, recurring volume that made GP Transco Dunlop + Falken's number one carrier in its quarterly bid process, according to Senior Distribution Center Manager Bruce Albright.

THE OPERATION

About Dunlop + Falken's Operation

Bruce Albright, Senior Distribution Center Manager at Falken Tire and Dunlop Tire, oversees day-to-day operations at the company's Joliet, Illinois distribution center. With more than 30 years of warehousing and logistics experience and seven and a half years with the company, Bruce is responsible for a large and complex operation.

The Joliet DC is a 385,000-square-foot facility running one shift, five days a week, with occasional Saturday operations when volume demands it. The site employs 35 team members dedicated to keeping the operation running smoothly.

From a logistics standpoint, the mission is clear: pickups must happen on time, deliveries must happen on time, and service disruptions must be minimized.

In the tire business, timing matters even more than in many traditional shipping environments.

Unlike palletized freight that can often be unloaded quickly by forklift, tire deliveries are far more labor-intensive. Tires are often unloaded one by one, which means unloading can take up to two hours, not 35 to 40 minutes. That makes the delivery appointment window far more critical.

When a truck arrives late, the downstream effects are immediate. Customers schedule labor around expected delivery times. If a truck is delayed, their team may be left waiting with paid labor sitting idle. In many cases, a late arrival can also force a rescheduled delivery, which means the customer may not get the tires they needed on the day they needed them.

For Dunlop + Falken, that makes carrier performance a direct part of customer service.

"The communication was excellent. If GP's late, we know hours in advance."

THE CHALLENGE

The Transportation Challenge

Like many shippers, Dunlop + Falken faces the ongoing challenge of securing dependable capacity while maintaining service and controlling cost.

Some of their delivery regions are especially difficult to serve consistently, including remote areas such as North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. In addition to geographic challenges, the broader transportation market has introduced increasing concerns around freight theft, fraud, and broker security.

At the same time, Dunlop + Falken needed carriers that could do more than simply cover loads. They needed partners who could communicate early, show up professionally, deliver consistently, and support the unique operating realities of the tire business.

THE BEGINNING

How the Relationship Started

The relationship between GP Transco and Dunlop + Falken began around mid-2020, when Dunlop + Falken was looking to add capacity to its carrier network.

Initially, the companies started doing business through GP Transco's brokerage side. But the turning point came after GP Transco leadership visited Bruce and his team in person to present the company's capabilities.

During that conversation, one detail stood out immediately: GP Transco's delivery territory closely mirrored Dunlop + Falken's customer footprint.

That alignment opened the door to a bigger partnership. Bruce shared customer delivery locations, GP Transco evaluated pricing and capacity, and from there the relationship began to scale. As Bruce described it, "it just flourished from there."

TRUST

What Built Trust Early

According to Bruce, trust was established early in the relationship through one key differentiator: communication.

In many shipper-carrier relationships, the problem is not only the delay itself — it is the lack of notice. When carriers fail to communicate issues in advance, shippers lose the ability to notify customers, adjust labor planning, and soften the impact of service disruptions.

Bruce noted that GP Transco stood out because when delays happened, his team knew about them hours in advance. That kind of visibility gave Dunlop + Falken the chance to proactively communicate with customers and often prevent a late load from becoming a larger service problem.

"Probably the number one win for us in the partnership was the drop trailers."

SERVICE EXCELLENCE

What Great Carrier Service Looks Like

From Bruce's perspective, great carrier service comes down to two essentials: on-time pickup and delivery, and consistent, proactive communication.

If a carrier is late picking up at the DC, it impacts warehouse labor, scheduling, and overtime. If a carrier is late delivering to the customer, it impacts the customer's labor plan, unloading window, and ultimately the customer's own business.

In the tire industry, those service failures can create immediate friction. That is why reliability matters so much — and why Dunlop + Falken values a carrier partner that can consistently execute against those standards.

IN ACTION

Christmas Miracle

One of the clearest examples of GP Transco's value came during the final week of December — one of the most difficult periods of the year for capacity.

At that time, Dunlop + Falken was heading into physical inventory, while also navigating the Christmas and New Year holiday window. Capacity in the Chicago market was tight, but customer demand remained high and additional freight still needed to move.

Bruce reached out directly to GP Transco's account manager for help.

GP Transco stepped in and covered eight additional loads that would not normally have been covered, helping Dunlop + Falken meet customer expectations during a critical operating period.

Measurable Growth

Partnership Load Volume

From 2–3 trailers per week to 2–3 trailers per day — GP Transco is now Dunlop + Falken's #1 carrier in the quarterly bid.
